Sweet Baby is a fun and lively composition. A part tongue-twister, a part an avalanche of endearments, or perhaps an obsession with sugar delicacies. With phrases like “cotton candy, bubble gum, truffle nougat, sour ball, snapper cracker sugarplum, almond cookie, lemon drop”, the music is sure to amuse and entertain.

As people continue to listen to “Glossolalia”, they send me comments about the composition, the incredible quality of performance by NeoQuartet, and the nuanced mix of the recording. I am incredibly fortunate to have worked with Jacek Puchalski on my album. Jacek has an extensive experience collaborating with local and international musicians, from classical world, through jazz, pop, experimental, and folk. When I work with a sound engineer it’s very important to me that he/she carry out my vision of the mix and the final sound. Jacek has been very accommodating from the start, but I quickly recognized the value of his hearing and intuition. Editing and mixing with him was like playing four hands piano.http://www.dosiamckay.com/glossolalia.shtmlhttp://www.rgstudio.pl/studia

And this is the most popular video on my YouTube channel (over 10K views) - a War and Peace scene with my demo music. No, the director did not request a soundtrack from me (too bad). This is one of the many exercises I did in the film scoring program at NYU.

This week I will be studying the score to “Sweet Baby” – a choral piece I recently wrote for a New York premiere by the members of the C4 Ensemble. Although I am not performing the piece, I need to be able to answer questions during the rehearsals. It’s in good taste to be able to explain one’s own music!
This Sunday, June 29 at 1:00 pm at Jan Hus Presbyterian Church, 351 E 74th St, New York, NY.

So this is high-brow art music for string quartet, and it is proper to hide behind a made-up Italian word like Expletivo, but the essence of this piece might be better expressed through the Polish idiom for swearing, which is “to throw meat”. Expletivo is vulgar. It should be bleeped out and cleaned up. Listener discretion is advised.

A few notes from the recent recording session of my new album “Glossolalia”. Today I share about working with the vibraphonist – Paweł Nowicki.Paweł made a guest appearance on the album as a soloist on “First In Flight” (http://www.dosiamckay.com/music/firstinflight.shtml), my composition for vibraphone and string quartet. Our primary challenge in interpreting the piece was the proper balance between the vibes and strings. We rehearsed the music in a small but lively room where the vibraphone overwhelmed the quartet, but everything changed once we entered the recording studio where the sound was more focused. We tried three different sets of sticks: hard, soft, and medium, and ended up choosing the hard set. They carried a unique brilliance and definition and provided a nice contrast against the strings. Poweł’s performance of my music was very lively and colorful. He possessed a unique touch by which his arpeggiated passages sounded like pearls bouncing off marble floor, whimsical and even, but never mechanical.A laureate of international competitions of contemporary music (Gaudeamus, Clarment-Ferrand, Warsaw Autumn, Radio Festival WDR, Unsound Festival in New York, and others), Paweł has been focusing on contemporary classical music, pop, and rock, as a soloist and chamber player. He was a great fit for “First In Flight” as this piece is a mixture of the classical and pop worlds requiring much virtuosity and imagination.Fun fact about Paweł: He carried his sticks and supplies in an old beat-up (what to me looked like) communist-era suitcase that made me think about Mary Poppins (in the photo background).http://www.dosiamckay.com/glossolalia.shtml

Something for a happy Friday: Cantabile (in Italian “singable”, or “song-like”) should unfold through long and eloquent phrases, but it does not have enough courage to immediately convey what hides in its heart. It is full of hesitation and uncertainty. How do we express fragile, undefinable emotions in a loud and cynical world? The secret of strength sometimes lies in tenderness. As the movement progresses, individual phrases gain shape and begin to form a bold message through a colorful harmonic progression of jazzy quartal sonorities.

Working with the 2nd Violin of NeoQuartet – Composer’s Perspective
A few notes from the recent recording session of my new album Glossolalia. Today I share about working with the 2nd Violin of NeoQuartet – Paweł Kapica.
Paweł very skilfully inhabited the sonic space between the 1st violin and the viola within the quartet. The color and intensity of his sound always supported and blended well with Karolina’s 1st violin, and yet remained distinct. At one point Karolina’s high string developed a buzz and the two musicians exchanged their parts and switched places to continue recording. The new combination sounded odd and we had to switch back and wait for Karolina to repair the string. You couldn’t interchange the two instruments without altering the color of the mix!
As a composer, I understand the role of the 2nd violin, but I don’t like to keep it in the background at all times. In fact, I often give it unexpected solos and, in fast passages, I treat it equally with the 1st violin so they can play antiphonally.
Fun fact about Paweł: Paweł played the leading part in the trio “Grit and Glitz” on the recording and did not hold back for a moment. This piece required a slight crossover to the dark side of pop, and he instinctively threw in a few fun slides into the music that were not written in. He may appear to be a reserved classical type, but give him the license to play with some glitz and he won’t look back. http://www.dosiamckay.com/glossolalia.shtml
